Deep Dive - where you can learn more about Sapona.

The SS Sapona was a 282-ft long concrete-hulled cargo ship that ran aground near Bimini during a hurricane in 1926. The wreck is easily visible above water and serves as a navigational landmark and a popular dive site. The Sapona was built by the Liberty Ship Building Co. of Wilmington, NC as part of a fleet of concrete ships authorized by Woodrow Wilson during WWI when steel was in short supply. The war ended before the ship was completed. Rather than be sold for scrap the vessel was used for oil storage. In 1925 Bruce Bethel purchased the vessel and brought it to Bimini where he used it as a warehouse for storing alcohol during the US Prohibition. The ship ran aground at this location during the 1926 Nassau Hurricane, a destructive category 4 storm that was one of the most severe to affect Nassau.
