The NAMC YS-11 is a turbo prop airliner designed and built by the Nihon Aircraft Manufacturing Company (NAMC), a Japanese consortium. The plane's name reportedly stems from the Latin alphabet spellings fo the Japaneses words for transport and design. It is reported that the YS-11 was the only post-war airliner to be wholly designed and manufactured in Japan until the development of the Mitsubishi regional jet in 2010.
This YS-11 was operated by Air Aruba, one of six YS-11A-213's in the fleet that saw service from 1988 to 1993. Air Aruba was founded in 1986, but by 2000 the rising costs of both operations and management forced the airline to declare bankruptcy. This YS-11 was sunk as an artificial reef in 2004. The aircraft is fully intact and faces the main runway at Queen Beatrix International Airport. Poetic.
