Built in 1956 the SS Stavronikita was a 355-foot long cargo ship. It was purchased by the Greek shipping company Larnax Cia Naviera in 1976 to transport cement from Ireland to Barbados. On what would be its last voyage in August of 1976, the vessel caught fire and went adrift. The fire rendered the vessel useless. It was towed into the port of Bridgetown and remained there for two years. The government of Barbados purchased the hull for $30,000 and scuttled it 400 yards from shore on November 28, 1978 to create an artificial reef. It rests upright at 36 m (115 ft). The bow faces east, the single prop is at 40m / 130 ft, and the top of the mast is at 6m / 20 ft. The huge forward and aft cargo holds, and the cabins, stairways and engine rooms can be explored. The main deck is at 24m / 80 ft. Marine life is abundant.
