Samuel Hall Lord (1778 – 1844), aka Sam Lord, was one of Barbados’s most famous bucanneers. Legend has it he hung lanterns high on coconut trees and lured ships to strand on the reefs offshore of his estate, thinking they were in bound for the port city of Bridgetown. He plundered the stricken ships, amassed a fortune and used it to build a castle mansion. Eventually his castle was turned into a hotel, which was gutted by fire on 20 October 2010.
