The MV El Augila , Spanish for The Eagle, has an interesting history. During a storm on November 24, 1989 the 230 ft long vessel stranded just north of Utila Island after mechanical problems. It rested there for several years, partially submerged, before being salvaged and towed into harbor. At that time a passing storm pushed the ship onto a small reef, where it was once again salvaged with the intention of sinking the ship for wreck diving. When the Auilla was sunk in 1997 it rested upright in 110 ft of water. In October 1989 Hurricane Mitch arrived and broke the ship into three pieces. More information can be found at MV El Aguila
