The SS Velma Lykes was a 251-ft long American cargo ship built in 1920. At 0332 hours on June 5, 1942, while enroute from Galveston, Texas to Cristobal, Panama carrying a cargo of 3,629 tons, the unescorted Velma Lykes (Master Hans G. Beck) was torpedoed on the starboard side by German U-boat U-158. The ship sank by the stern after one minute. There was no time to launch the lifeboats, but the survivors were able to rescue themselves on three rafts. The next day they were spotted by an aerial patrol and the Ardenvohr was dispatched to rescue them. On 10 June this ship was torpedoed and sunk by U-68. All the men from the Velma Lykes survived the second sinking and eventually made it to Cristobal. The actual location of the Velma Lykes is in question. This is not a regular dive site in Cancun, but it may interesting to explore.
