Deep Dive - where you can learn more about C-53 Xicotencatl.

The USS Scuffle (AM-298) was an Admirable class minesweeper built for the United States Navy during World War II. She received a Presidential Unit Citation and five battle stars for service in the Pacific. She was decommissiond in June 1946 and sold to the Mexican Navy on October 5, 1962, along with seventeen sister ships. She was renamed the ARM (Armada de la Mexico) DM-05 and converted to serve as a gunboat, patrolling the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. In 1994 she was renamed ARM General Felipe Xicontencati (C53). She was sunk as an artificial reef on June 5, 2000. On October 21-22, 2005 category 4 Hurricane Wilma moved the shipwreck 100 ft (30m) north of its original location and nearly tore the ship in half. Today the vessel lies upright in 26 m of water, on a sand bar near Chankanaab Park. A mooring buoy was added to the bow and the stern to facilitate diving.
